Le Cyclop

Le Cyclop

On her way to London, a friend of ours visited Fountainebleau, near Paris, to see ‘Le Cyclop’, a structure by Jean Tinguely. Not many people know about. It is in the middle of a forrest (Milly-la-Forêt)–and quite simply out of this world.

In her own words “I know you’d love it. It’s insanely crazy, beautiful and breathtaking…my photos don’t do it justice. You can even go inside, climb up through it’s throat, and all the way into the ‘brain’. It can be ‘turned’ on–and makes a marvelous noise while moving humongeous metal balls around inside/ and outside of the structure…”

Judge for yourself if Nina’s images do it justice by visiting the sculpture for yourself.

The “Cyclops”- a bizarre experiment in metal and movement – is the life achievement of Swiss sculptor Jean Tinguely, a project begun in 1969 that took two decades and required the playful collaboration of a dozen or so artist friends, among them fellow sculptor Bernard Luginbuhl and his whimsical wife Niki de Saint-Phalle, famed for her Pompidou Center fountain and Tarot garden in Tuscany.

Sara Baras is Carmen

Carmen by Sara Baras

Carmen by Sara Baras

Carmen has become a myth that has lived for decades in the collective imaginary of Spanish culture. Independent and strong-willed, Carmen has broken the chains from the character created by Merime, and today Carmen stands independently for and by herself. Her passionate character is no longer untimely and her freedom to take decisions and live life to the full is today etched on the souls of many women who own a little bit of Carmen within themselves.

This Carmen that Sara Baras has now created has also become independent from the creative imagination of both the original story’s author and Bizet’s, the maestro who put music to the story. Sara Baras’ Carmen is the Carmen that takes a further step forward for herself, a further step away from Bizet’s music and Merime’s storyline. But Baras’ Carmen remains faithful to the tragedy of love that is her trademark, and the artist expresses this the best way possible, with the language that only Flamenco can provide.

Carmen by Sara Baras can be seen at Teatre Coliseo in Barcelona until 1st November 2009.  This limited run of shows is sponsored by our very own Hotel Omm, located just off Passeig de Gracia.

Nomiya at Palais de Tokyo

Nomiya at Palais de Tokyo

Art Home is a story of multiple artists with one common ambition – to create unforgettable experiences around food.

To make their passion a reality, Electrolux and contemporary art centre Palais de Tokyo joined forces with contemporary artist Laurent Grasso, architect Pascal Grasso and culinary director Gilles Stassart.  Nomiya, a new creative journey around culinary art was born.

The structure features a dining room for twelve people with a panoramic view over the Seine and the Eiffel tower. The restaurant comprises a glass cabin and a perforated metal screen covering the central cooking area, with coloured LED lighting placed between the metal skin and the glass core. White Corian furniture populates the dining room.  All this combines to offer a unique lunchtime experience, or as the sun starts to set, a remarkable evening ambience. Gilles Stassart and his team attend to the culinary needs of their guests as they sit at their table in the extraordinary ambience of the Nomiya dining room, where guests discover a moment of culinary bliss and creativity.
