Barcelona Beyond Sonar

Barcelona already has a reputation for a good party, but when Catalunyans call it “the wildest night of the year”, you know you’re onto something.  If you’re going to make it to Barcelona for Sonar, you should think about staying for a few more days and celebrating the Feast of Sant Joan, Barcelona style.  The “feast”, which celebrates the Summer Solstice, takes place on the 23rd, with the actual fest day being the 24th.  Fire is an essential element in the celebration, along with water and herbs, and the element you’re most likely to see and hear. Seen as a purifying element, Catalans know this night as the ‘Nit del Foc’ or night of fire, and bonfires of furniture are burnt throughout the city as well as an abundance of fireworks.

If you head to the beach, go around 9 and be sure to bring a little picnic, lots of Cava, some extra blankets to keep warm, and some fireworks of your own.  Musicians, jugglers, and drummers perform for the gathered masses.  If you can’t make it to the beach, head to one of the local plazas, most either have performers or  large gatherings of celebrating locals.

If you’re not partial the excitement of never knowing where the next firework is going to be thrown from, but still want to watch, consider heading up to the hills and overlooking the city from Montjuic castle.

Try out the Coque, the official food of Sant Joan, available in sweet or salty varieties.  Be sure to stock up before shops close on the 23rd, as the 24th is a holiday and almost everything is closed.  The Feast of Sant Joan isn’t a holiday that is taken very seriously in Barcelona.  It’s more of a kick off to summer, and with the excitement of the World Cup filling the streets this year, there’s all the more reason to celebrate into the night.
