Huge music festivals usually have at least a little something for everyone, but at Primavera Sound in Barcelona, there’s more than just “something” for indie music lovers. Almost 200 acts are scheduled to perform at the tenth San Miguel Primavera Sound making the festival a who’s who in music today. Bands like Black Lips, Broken Social Scene, Panda Bear, Yeasayer, Wilco, Tortise and The Antlers are just a handful of the names rocking the festival. While most of the bands are indie, it is the British duo The Pet Shop Boys who will be headlining the show.
The San Miguel Primavera Sound is one of those rare festivals that manage to maintain their indie quality while organizing a huge event. This was the key point when Primavera was founded – too many festivals turn into over-sponsored events with mainstream bands. This festival doesn’t mind taking risks, as long as they’ve stayed true to their indie hearts.
The majority of the concerts will take place in the Ponle Nou neighbourhood at the Parc del Forum. Spread out over 39 hectares, the festival has plenty of room to spread out. Last year’s Primavera had 76,000 visitors, who all enjoyed easy access through the many connecting metros, buses and trams that reach the park.
If you’re in the biz, register now for the “Pro” area, where you’ll be able to meet and greet other labels, booking agencies, promoters, and organizers. This is the first year the festival has offered this option, after noticing how many international labels made the trip in the past. A parallel programme, “Primavera a la Ciutat”, will start a week earlier than the festival on May 21st. A number of artists are collaborating with Primavera Sound to present music in various underground clubs as well as in the Joan Miró Park on the 29th and 30th of May. Not to be missed is closing the show to the Primavera a la Ciutat featuring El Petit De Cal Eril, Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard, and the Black Lips.
There will also be the premiere screening in Spain of ODDSAC, a cross between a film and a visual album that the American band Animal Collective has made in collaboration with Danny Perez.
It’s no secret that White Line Hotels loves indie too. That’s why after a night of seeing great bands, you should head back to your room at Hotel Omm. Completely unique, Hotel Omm offers all the little luxuries you’ll need to get you geared up for your late nights at the festival. Lounge, spa, pool, and cool rooms with huge comfy beds, what more could you want after a day and night of bands. Getting to and from the festival is a snap – it’s just a short ride down the Avenue Diagonal.
