The Lions of Selous

The lions in the Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania are present in huge numbers; an estimated four thousand lions. They are common everywhere in the northern part of the Selous; and as luck would have it this is where almost all the tourist camps are to be found. If you plan to have a lion safari in the Selous you will not be disappointed. However, they are not so easy to spot in this reserve as they are in the open grass land of the Serengeti in the north of Tanzania. The dense vegetation is the perfect cover for the shy Selous lion to take shelter and hide from the safari vehicles.

Selous project wins global recognition

The Selous Conservation Programme (SCP), which was implemented from the late 1980s through a German support, has set a precedent in wildlife management.

Many aspects of the programme are now accepted as modern best practices in sustainable wildlife conservation, it was revealed.

Mr Gerhard Anger, a German aid agency (GTZ) official, says SCP has contributed significantly “to the knowledge of how to manage biodiversity projects in the context of development cooperation.”

“It has also influenced Tanzania’s wildlife policy development. At the same time, SCP has produced tangible results in and around the reserve and these are acknowledged worldwide,” he noted.
