Vélib’ bicycles in Paris, Segways in San Francisco and now GoCars in Barcelona, getting from destination to destination is now part of the adventure of exploring a new city.  The onboard GPS system of these clever little yellow convertibles guides you from site to site, the car will tell you local stories, histories of important sites, and give you directions. There are a variety of tours you can follow, lasting from 1 hour to an entire day.  If you don’t want to stop at a site, it’s no problem; you can arrange your itinerary to fit your interests and the GoCar will follow your lead.  Available in 6 languages, it’s like having a local give you a tour going where the tour buses can’t, such as the small winding streets of the old town.

The company behind this little wonder has also taken steps achieve carbon neutrality, not just for the cars, butfor the entire firm.  GoCar Tours has measured the emissions of the vehicles, employee commutes and travels, as well as company electricity use.  They offset these emissions by supporting a variety of projects around the world.  While the current version of the GoCar is runs on petrol an electric version is reaching the end stages of development and should be available before the year is out.

Of course, what would a personalized tour be without your own soundtrack?  If you do have the chance to zip around Barcelona don’t forget to bring your MP3 player, so you can hook it up to the in car stereo system.  Another tour innovation?  After the first hour, you are only charged for every 5 successive minutes.  While the car only fits 2 people, there’s a 110-litre trunk, meaning you can stop by La Boqueria and pick up a cheese and bread picnic on your way to the Güell Park.  However, for those travelling in groups through Barcelona, picture a conga line of these smart little cars weaving through the city.

GoCar pick up is just around the corner from White Line’s Hotel Omm. There isn’t a faster way to get your exploration of Barcelona started.  You can tour the city in the morning in a GoCar, have a dip in Omm’s rooftop swimming pool in the afternoon, dinner in the chic Restaurant Moo and celebrating into the night at the Mon Key Club, a truly laid back Barcelona experience.
