Kamchatka

Picking up great design pieces in Budapest is easy in the design district, located just across from White Line’s Lánchíd 19, an exceptional neighbourhood for wandering or shopping.

Featuring hand made textiles, fashions, jewellery, and some very unique hats, these shops are destinations if you’re looking to bring a little bit of Budapest home. The three shops are just around the corner from each other and would make for a nice afternoon stroll after lunch on the L19 terrace.

My favourite part of Kamchatka design is their hand-tailored bed sheets and pillows.   Created with rich fabrics and reversible, they make going to bed a lavish affair.  Marta Schulteisz, the designer, also produces shantung silk handbags and a women’s fashions with a Parisian edge.  The studio is in the shop and every item is customizable.  The new line for 2010 features opulent scarves and a range of tasenka bags.

Just a few doors down from Kamchatka on the Nyári Pál Utca is Eventuell.  Home to 5 textile designers, the Eventuell Gallery focuses more on small series fabrics, furniture, and interior design. The group independently produces natural fabric pieces for the gallery using traditional Hungarian techniques and patterns with a modern twist.  In addition to the beautiful fabrics the artisans produce, they also do personalized collections and interior design.  A range of accessories from local jewellery designers is available as well.

Valéria Fazekas

Valéria Fazekas’s bold hats grace 18 V50, just steps from Kamchatka and Eventuell Gallery.  The hats are something between a functional accessory and sculpture.  She’s named her more recent Constructivist inspired hats “headwear objects.” The pieces are unique, limited edition, have an uncommon aesthetic.   The headwear objects are created balancing colour, texture and symmetrical and asymmetrical forms, resulting in a playfully functional object d’art.

Where else would Lánchíd 19 be located but just across the river from Budapest’s design district?  Directly on the riverbank of the Danube and regularly named as one of the worlds best hotels, a trip to Budapest would be incomplete without a stay here.
