Croatia – The Korkyra/Korcula Baroque Festival is a new annual international event hosted on this historic island, which will be launched from 7th to 16th September 2012 in collaboration with the Conde Nast hot-listed Lesic Dimitri Palace Hotel – a tres chic boutique holiday hideaway housed in a former palace.
The festival will showcase a selection of the world’s leading ensembles and soloists specialized in Baroque music, including the Academy of Ancient Music (Great Britain), Laurence Cummings (Great Britain), Le Parlament de Musique (France), Currende & Eric Van Nevel (Belgium), La Venexiana (Italy), Red Priest (Great Britain), the Croatian Baroque Ensemble (Croatia) along with others.
Twelve concerts will be held over ten days along with a series of supporting events focusing on Baroque music. Along with the festival’s high artistic credentials the event will also promote the richness of Korčula’s cultural monuments and the whole town as a unique architectural treasure of Croatia.
The Academy of Ancient Music, above, is renowned for thrilling audiences with its fresh, engaging performances of baroque and classical music. Playing on original instruments and inspired by original soundworlds, the Academy of Ancient Music’s music making takes on the spirit of exploration, innovation and free-thinking.
Red Priest is the only early music group in the world to have been compared in the press to the Rolling Stones, Jackson Pollock, the Marx Brothers, Spike Jones and the Cirque du Soleil. Founded in 1997, and named after the flame-haired priest, Antonio Vivaldi.
Currende ensemble was founded in 1974 by Erik Van Nevel, one of its singers. Initially they worked without a conductor. In recent years, more and more productions are done this way. Currende’s singing style is very recognizable.
La Venexiana, below, was founded in 1996 by Claudio Cavina, and is presently the most well known madrigal group around. Its name derives from the anonymous renaisaance comedy of the same name.
