London: White Russians and Bowling

Bowling and burgers… What could be better? How about a healthy dose of humour and a White Russian in hand while working your lungs with a little karaoke? All Star Lanes might call themselves “boutique bowling” but when it’s a 50’s diner atmosphere with a side of what are purported to be London’s best burgers, it’s hard to think boutique.

You can find this completely clichéd amusement at All Star Lanes in the old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane. The place is huge and you’ll almost hope that you have to wait for a lane, especially when while you wait you can karaoke in the Country & Western booths. It’s generally packed to the brim on weekends and after 7, but unless you’re really, really serious about bowling, the crowds just add to the entertainment.

The lanes were founded by Mark von Westenholz and Adam Breeden, when they decided to combine a true (and I think probably a touch of “the Dude” inspired irony was involved) passion for bowling with the changing face of London’s night scene. Whatever inspired it, it’s bound to be nothing short of amusing.

The lanes pride themselves on being “cheesy American fun,” but honestly, isn’t that the true spirit of bowling? And, lucky you, Brick Lane is just a few minutes from White Line Hotels insider tip Town Hall Hotel and Apartments. The design aesthetic may be completely different, but you’ll find that both hold attention to detail, the spirit of the local, and simply enjoying yourself in high regard.
