New clubs and restaurants open in Stockholm at a speedy pace, and before you can blink, they’ve gone, moved, or changed their entire concept. It’s unusual to find a place that lasts more than a few seasons, and even more remarkable to find a place that has maintained a chic ambience for over 20 years.
PA & Co. is just that type of restaurant. For years they’ve been serving hearty Swedish fare with a contemporary take to Stockholm’s creative scene and celebrities alike. Even though they’ve been mentioned in several novels about the city’s rich and famous, PA & Co. has an authenticity that is often lost with prominence. The wine list is commendable, the fish is fresh and prepared to perfection, and there are even a few surprises on the menu, such as Lone Star beer from Texas, which goes perfectly with the grilled cheeseburger.
Although most of the menu items are hearty, it’s not unusual to ask for a specially prepared meal and simple dishes like Spaghetti Bolognese are a white flag to picky eaters. While not prohibitively expensive, in comparison to other places in the city, be prepared for a fashionable crowd. What else would you expect from a bistro that has both chandeliers and beer from Texas? One model-esque diner next to us specially ordered an entirely steamed meal, and kudos to PA & Co. for creating a mouth watering and colourful dish.
After enjoying an espresso and the Gino for dessert, just head down the stairs next to the restaurant to Bern’s, another staple on the Stockholm scene. Bern’s is worth at least one night out. The terrace is a great place to spend summer evenings, and the opulent interior has a cosy feel that would be perfect for long winter nights.
Hotel Skeppsholmen is just a few minutes walking distance from both PA & Co. and Bern’s. You won’t want to miss breakfast, which offers traditional fare, such as eggs and a variety of cereals, but also a few house specialties, like mouth-watering French toast triangles, and fruit nut bread that will keep you going through the day.
