Let the spring art fairs begin! Paris has two extraordinary fairs in the month of March – Art Paris and Le Pavillon des Arts et du Design (PAD). Both fairs are rather new, as far as art fairs go, and attempt to re-establish Paris on the New York – London – Berlin art corridor. Although the events aren’t affiliated they do make for a good reason to spend a long week in ‘La Ville-Lumière’. PAD will be covered in our Wednesday post. For now, we’ll cover Art Paris + Guests.
Art Paris + Guests – March 18th to 22th, directed by Lorenzo Rudolf, firmly attempts to distance itself from traditional art fairs. The galleries, most of which are French with a few international players, have teamed up with “guests” – international designers, architects, chefs, writers, musicians, filmmakers and fashion designers to create a program for the event.
For example Paris’s Lélia Mordoch gallery has partnered with Juliette Aittouarès of Espaces 54, a beloved 50′s, 60′s and 70′s interior design boutique. Together they will create a kinetic house inspired by Jacques Tati. Furniture, collectables, paintings and Op-art from Julio Le Parc, Horacio Garcia Rossi, François Morellet, Francisco Sobrino, and Jesús Rafael Soto will harmoniously come together in the house the works have inspired.
Additionally “Platforms” will be presented, which will exhibit up and coming forces in the contemporary art world. The platforms are Indonesia, Finland, Afriques, Visions, Utopia and the fascinating Collectors Apartment. The Collectors Apartment located in St-Germain-des-Prés is an imaginary apartment designed by François Laffanour, In Situ, Fabienne Leclerc, Jousse Entreprise, Hervé Loevenbruck, and Georges-Philippe & Nathalie Vallois. The toilet, bathroom, dining room, bedroom, living room, and even the collector’s dog are all works of art.
Don’t miss the evening events at the restaurant La Plage Parisienne. Between the 18th and the 21st of March they’ll be hosting the after hours party, our advice is to go on the 19th when DJ’s will be spinning until 4am.
With all this art, there’s only one logical place to stay in Paris – The Hôtel des Académies et des Arts. Located in the Latin Quarter and dedicated to the creative arts, the intimate hotel is sure to book out fast. The Chez Charlotte tearoom is perfect for mingling with curators, artists, designers and gallerists. While there allow the Hôtel des Académies et des Arts to arrange an artist’s studio visit, a massage in the wellness room or enjoy a screening in the artist’s video room. The hotel is painted inside and out with Jérôme Mesnager’s “white bodies” and original artwork from Sophie de Watrigant can be seen. Tell them we sent you and they’ll welcome you with champagne and treat you to some Pierre Hermé macaroons.
