Peter Liversidge: Proposals for Town Hall Hotel & Apartments

Town Hall Hotel & Apartments, London

In the latest in a series of exhibitions by London East End artists on its hotel’s grounds, Town Hall Hotel & Apartments offers its visitors the opportunity to question what is possible and the invitation to participate in, or even become a patron of, the shift from abstract possibility to realization.

As artist Peter Liversidge sees it, this shift from idea to a physical state of realization is an integral, but by no means always necessary, stage of the creative process. In the last several years Liversidge has worked internationally on the basis of “proposals,” a collection of hand-typed A4 sheets of ideas that exist first in the artists mind, then on paper, then in the mind of those who read them, and then finally, in some cases, as a work that is tangible past the printed page. Always with a unique sense of humor, and often with a style that defies easy definition, Liversidge invites others to think about possibility, if not where in the process of creation an artwork actually exists.

Proposals for Town Hall Hotel & Apartments, the latest book of “proposals” from Liversidge, will be available to all guests at various locations around the hotel’s building and is on sale at the hotel’s reception desk for £10. Included are 98 proposals for artworks that could be realized on, or near, the hotel’s premises – from the creation of a snowstorm on Midsummers’ Day in Patriot Square, to the making of a strawberry pudding from berries grown on site. The proceeds from the book sales will finance the production of this series of yet-physically-unrealized works.
