Curated by Vienna’s contemporary and collaborative line-up is enough to set any art lovers a flutter. 20 galleries will feature 20 artist-curated exhibitions between May 6th and June 5th. The focus of the 2010 Curated by Vienna is art and film and will include a range of lectures on the subject. The goal is to explore the latest trends in the visual arts, and why contemporary artists are fascinated by film and moving images.
The ambitious project is only in its second year, but believes that Vienna is at the crossroads of North and South, East and West, and therefore ideally placed to examine the contemporary international art scene. Anyone who has been to Vienna knows that the city has some of the finest museums and non-profit institutions in the world.
If you’re up for some gallery hopping, the official opening will take place on the evening of Thursday, May 6th. Another chance to rub elbows with the real Vienna arts scene is at the gallery breakfast on May 8th from 11 to 1. While you’re there, don’t forget to drop by and view the exhibitions at VIENNAFAIR.
Although all 20 of the galleries have invited remarkable guest curators, there are a few that stand out. The Blue Noses, consisting of Alexander Shaburov and Viacheslav Mizin, have been chosen to curate the Knoll Galerie. They’ve chosen 10 artists, including Ilya Chichkan, whose haunting works represented the Ukraine in the 2009 Venice Biennale. The Blue Noses, whose provocative works push the boundaries of taboo, have been working with video since 1999. Their exhibition at will examine the history of the relationship between video, cinema, and society.
The Charim Galerie exhibition, featuring painter Daniel Pitín and curated by VALIE EXPORT, is another do not miss exhibition. VALIE EXPORT is a pioneer in the field of conceptual media art, whose works grace some of the top museum collections in the world. The paintings created by Daniel Pitín are partially developed into film sets, demonstrating his preoccupation with architecture and what we see as film.
The panel discussions, focusing on film, art and Vienna, are a highlight and will be taking place in the departure lounge at VIENNAFAIR. The discussions will be held in English and boast of celebrated experts in the field such as Daniel Birnbaum, Michael Rush, AA Bronson, and Paul Willemsen among many others.
There’s only one place to stay if you’re checking out the arts in Vienna – White Line’s Hollman Beletage, where you can take a break in the garden between gallery visits or brush up on film in their private cinema.
