The first three Sundays in February will see more than 35,000 spectators attend the White Turf events in St. Moritz, which range from high-speed sprints to skijöring.
Besides sprint races and gallop races, other flat races over various lengths and trotting races will be held over the series. The White Turf world exclusive, the Skikjöring, is a particular favourite with the spectators. The skiers are pulled by riderless thoroughbreds over a distance of 2,700m at speeds of up to 50 km/h. Courage, stamina, strength and skiing skills decide who will collect the greatest number of points over the three race Sundays in order to be crowned the year’s ‘King of the Engadine’.
The events culminate with the ‘Grand Prix of St. Moritz’, held on the third race Sunday for the 71st time this year. It is the most lucrative race in Switzerland, with prize money of CHF 121,121. Besides the captivating equestrian sports, show interludes – such as this year’s appearance of a riderless ‘Hungarian Post’ with eight thoroughbreds – art, international catering and live music are also an integral part of the event on the frozen lake of St. Moritz.
White Turf, an internationally renowned horse race that attracts some of the world’s best jockeys, dates back to 1907. For more information, check out the White Turf website. The Greulich Hotel will provide you with the perfect retreat to unwind in after a day of equine entertainment and if you’re planning on being at the races on the 14th, what better way to do it than with the Greulich’s Valentines weekend offer.
