Tracey Emin Why I Never Became a Dancer, 1995
Youth. In a lot of creative fields, it’s rewarded. In visual arts…well…not so much. It’s a field in the arts that celebrates life experience and could even be said to festishize, to one degree or another, a fair bit of suffering — and let’s face it, most have to be well past the 20-somethings to begin to compete against those standards, leaving teenage angst to rock and roll. Sometimes teenage angst does break out of music’s territory and into the gallery, though, and Why I Never Became A Dancer at Munich’s Haus der Kunst presents 15 videos by international artists to prove it.

Although all of the artists shown were well out of their teens (and even 20s) at the time the works were made, the subject of this exhibition made in collaboration with the Goetz Collection is resolutely centered on youth. Time does provide new perspectives, after all, and on viewing the diverse positions presented here, you’ll be glad it does. From Tracey Emin’s titular work’s personal expressions of triumph over alienation, to Rineke Dijkstra’s isolation of youth culture outside of it’s usual environment, to Cao Fei’s exploration of computer gaming, Why I Never Became A Dancer covers a lot of ground in what forms and constitutes the identity of a generation.

Why I Never Became A Dancer is the second collaborative exhibition at Haus der Kunst with the renowned Goetz Collection. The series of cooperative exhibitions will continue until 2014 in the very special space of Haus der Kunst‘s air raid shelter, utilizing the closet-like confinement of the space to elevate the works to a new level of viewing intimacy.
