INTRO

Originally conceived as the village schoolhouse back in the 1930s, the traditional house, with alpine curb appeal of larch shingles, gabled rooftop and green shutters frame the lattice windows, has been lovingly converted into a small design hotel. Today Alpenloge holds a style vigil over lush pastures, wild meadows and alpine eye candy of Allgäu across the four compass points in each direction.

Earthed tones inspired by the doorstep nature form the interior basecamp of the Alpenloge in a camouflage of inked botanical prints, fauna across vast wallpapers and licks of Little Green paint keep the mood sober and subtle. Timber-plank flooring, bold Space Copenhagen furniture, oversized forest-green velvet sofas, raw linens, 1931 Moser chairs and metallic-glowing Angelpoise lamps cast the places of conversation.

Alpenloge is not just a pretty face – the hotel was designed with the environment in mind, not only in locally sourcing and utilising natural products and building materials. Alpenloge uses an in-room air ventilation system that was awarded with first price by The Passive House Institute for its energy recovery system.

There is an obvious connection to the 360 degree outdoor theatre of the Allgäu, Alpenloge streams with light and through the cinematic windows and balconies, you can immerse yourself in the raw majesty of nearby mountains, undulating meadows and the picturesque village Scheffau, where farmhouses rub up against an ‘onion-turreted’ church.

The mountains shimmer invitingly - but we cannot promise you won’t want to leave Alpenloge.

ROOMS

Each of the two suites, six junior suites and a double are painted a different colour - from earth red, ballet-slipper pink to fern green. Anja is a self-confessed colour addict and she has turned her competent eye to the styling of the bedrooms, and each one has come out a little differently.

All have high ceilings and are light-flooded from windows flanked by a swish of taupe-coloured linen curtains. King-size Schramm Werkstätte beds feature in every room, often with a splash of designer wallpaper above - perhaps a Wall & Deco heritage swirl or a nature-inspired Little Green floral print, or a framed vintage botanical artwork. A nice touch by the beds are 1930s light switches, a simple antidote to multi-switch frustration!

Wooden floors are warmed by neutral cow hide rugs, furniture comes as a mix of classic and modern - lounge chairs take inspiration from the 50s with lambskin finishes and reconditioned armchairs come from the schoolhouse loft in mid-century designs.

Some of the suites open out onto bedecked balconies, with carefully placed sun loungers that make the most of the warming mountain sun and uplifting alpine views.

Bathrooms are stylish nests wrapped in charcoal-hued metro tiles with reflective silver tubs and rain showers. Double sinks come with brass taps and large hessian laundry bags adds to the scene of pared-back style.

FOODIE

Breakfast and dinner are served at either long communal tables or squares for two in a glass pavilion with stunning views towards the garden. The cuisine is based on regional products with some Bavarian heartland classics, to an innovative pairing of Asian and Mediterranean dishes.

Breakfast is served, so no need to hit the buffet and includes the usual Bavarian heroes of rural alpine goodness – traditional rye breads, farmhouse butter, thick creamy yoghurts and pastries crafted from mountain recipes. Ham, cheese and salamis come beautifully arranged on a tiered stand.

Dinner is a more epicurean affair. Choose between classic fondue or a menu featuring delicacies such as locally caught trout, porcini risotto and goat’s cheese tart.

Wellness

Downstairs there’s a cosy, light-filled wellness area, where wood meets natural stone, accents of green take inspiration from nature and a vast cinematic view pans out from floor-to-ceiling-to-wall-to-glass. There’s usually a crackling fire - this is the place to concede to the panorama.

After a day of hiking the little spa is an appealing option for unwinding with its brine steam bath and a sauna-with-a-view. A massage room is the scene of relaxing herbal compress treatments, with fresh herbs gathered from the mountains.

OWNERS

Anja Engelke and her Bavarian partner Muchael Schott discovered the old 1930s school building and took up the challenge of reimagining it as a boutique hotel with a contemporary style. Their warm welcome has become infamous and the duo make the most perfect hosts.  Michael will greet you at the door like an old friend and a drink is within your clasp within minutes.

"Two years ago, we decided to bring a wonderful feeling of home to a very special place for us. A place we wanted to fill with our own memories, impressions and experiences. So here she stands now: the Alpenloge. Our home in all directions that we want to share with you.”

LOCATION

The Alpenloge is located in the four-country corner and is accessible from Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Austria. You’ll find the hotel situated in the alpine village of Scheffau and the sparkling waters of Lake Constance are just a 20-minute drive away.

The mountains are within easy reach, enjoy hiking and skiing at Hochgrat, which at 1.834m is highest mountain of the western Allgau.

Bavaria is every bit the storybook fantasy you’ve seen in movies.
