Franz West

Geneva is home to many luxuries. From chocolate to jewellery, watches to highbrow culture. No wonder, then, that Larry Gagosian, the famed art gallerist whose career started off with a first gallery in Los Angeles, also opened a Genevan outpost in 2010. Now hosting an extensive Franz West exhibition, September 22nd – December 16th, 2017.

For Gagosian, who’s considered to be one of the most successful contemporary art dealers in the world, it’s his tenth venture, and it’s testament to the Swiss capital’s prestige in today’s art world circles. And with one in ten billionaires worldwide residing in Switzerland, the choice reflects a serious dose of business acumen on Gagosian’s part.

Located in an Art Deco building, Gagosian Gallery Geneva takes up the entire 140-square metre first floor, where local buyers, collectors and culture fiends will be treated to three to four shows a year. Gagosian’s reputation for organizing seminal exhibitions by leading modern and contemporary artists has undoubtedly been reinforced in the last 7 years he’s been around in Geneva.

Kicking off with a Giacometti exhibition of rarely seen pieces in 2010, Gagosian Geneva has ventured into a wide-ranging selection of artists to put into the Genevan spotlight. This summer, a career-spanning show of the enigmatic and reclusive 20th century French painter and photographer, Balthus graced the Swiss space, and this Autumn, it’s the Austrian sculptor and installation artist Franz West whose formal and conceptual work stands to stun Genevan audiences.

West, who lived, worked and died in Vienna from 1947 until 2012, has proven to be an incredibly influential artist whose aesthetic and ideas can be seen most clearly in furniture design. Blending sculpture, land art, installation art, performance and graphic art in his long and prolific career, Franz West is known for his formal experiments that turned art galleries into design lounges.

The Gagosian exhibition spans West’s career, with works from 1970 until 2010.  His manipulations of everyday materials are both philosophical and playful, linking art to social experience in a revolutionary way that brings the inside and the outside of the gallery closer together, transforming viewers into participants.
