World's Best Wine Cellar

The approach is impressive with its palatial facade, epic mountainous Swiss backdrop and views for days across the crystal waters of Lake Lucerne, but within the Park Vitznau Hotel’s interior, aside from the striking luxuriant lodgings, an extraordinary wine collection and oenophile's paradise awaits.

Enough to satisfy the most sophisticated oenophile, the hotel houses a wine museum with six themed wall-to-wall subterranean wine cellars arranged according to their region. This wine odyssey, stored in a range of innovative glass, wood and stone environments, counts in excess of 32,000 bottles in its ever-increasing collection. Further facts and figures: the holdings span four centuries of wine history, are calculated at over twenty-six million Swiss Francs in value, and include four thousand types of wine. The most expensive wine, a five litre bottle of Mouton Rothschild from 1945, the oldest, a bottle of Chateau d'Yquem from 1811 protected in a golden casket.

So where does one begin?

The various curated sections assist in the exploration: the “French Cellar” includes French wines from all regions dating back to the 19th century from Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhone and Alsace; the “New World Cellar” located within a playful blue shipping container that casts the imagination beyond the European continent, presents a spectrum of bottles from America, New Zealand, Australia and beyond; maturing in wooden pentagonal wine racks the “Old World Cellar” includes Swiss, Austrian, German, Spanish, Italian and Hungarian wine rarities, that also extend to wines from more exotic locations such as Lebanon; the “Champagne Cellar” showcases vintage champagnes and fine sparkling wines of Moët & Chandon, Krug and Roederer; the “Rarities Cellar” comprises coveted pieces from special vintages; and finally for the sweet tooth, the “Chateâu D’Yquem Cellar” presents every vintage since 1890 of the ubiquitous golden French Sauternes.
