If elegance is refusal – to borrow from the oft-quoted Coco Chanel – then Polish label thisisnon explores the very far end of the refusal spectrum by eliminating all decoration and frills from its designs, even categorizing them, not by garment type, but by the garment’s very basic component: its fabric.
On the label’s website, which is predominantly in black and white, the clothing is classified under four sections which represent the label’s four collections thus far: black wool, black merino 2, raw silk and black merino. Simplicity stripped to its bare bones.
Anna Dobek and Agata Macios, the label’s founders, conceive each piece in their collection as studies of the material, and of the garment’s most basic, primitive form. For the Raw Silk collection, for example, the idea was to use “raw, undyed fabric” that “reveals the natural structure of silk, while the chosen shade of white evokes the rawness of sandstone and clay.”
The Black Wool collection is a “thorough study of wool, its complex structure, finish, density. The fabrics we chose: thick, pure merino, smooth gabardine and delicate alpaca form a small gallery of wool's various forms, showing its natural beauty and wonderful versatility.”
thisisnon, French for ‘this is no’, captures perfectly the designer duos aim “to design clothing that is independent of fashion and trends.” They say: “we carefully select only essential elements to build beautifully minimal shapes. Our aim is to make a difference by encouraging timeless, long-lasting design that challenges fashion.”
It’s a philosophy that merges seamlessly with that of Małgosia & Wojtek Żółtowsky, the creative duo behind Hotel Galery 69, the lakeside boutique hotel in the Masuria District in Poland, surrounded by the dense forests of the Polish Lake District.
Filled with handmade furniture, it seems they were influenced by the same zest that led thisisnon to “carefully select only the essential elements to build beautifully minimal shapes.”
Respecting nature’s resources – all clothes are produced in Poland with attention to human and labour rights – and appealing to ideas rather than trends, thisisnon finds beauty in restraint.
And really, all one needs at Hotel Galery 69 are the simple things in life: a comfortable deckchair to take in the famous purple Warmia & Masuria sunsets over panoramic views of Wulpinskie Lake, and a thisisnon garment to shield you from the gentle breeze…
