Custom Lane Design & Creating Hub in Leith is one of Edinburgh’s hidden heroes of the creative scene, founded by Architecture and Design Studio GRAS.
Custom Lane in Edinburgh’s port-town, Leith, is a collaborative platform at heart, a buzzing hub to the communities of design and hotbed of culture for the very best of Design in Scotland. Inside, GRAS have imaginatively created a gallery, shared workshops, production studios, a café serving the best coffee in Leith, event spaces, smart hotdesks and salons dedicated to and fostering creative development.
GRAS is part of Groves-Raines Architects which are no strangers in taking on restoration projects forging heritage, provenance and creativity into once neglected buildings – including the close-by Pavilion at Lamb’s House in Leith and more recently working in partnership up in the Scottish Highlands, Kyle House Sutherland - both stylish exclusive hire lodgings of history and members of the White Line Hotels collective.
Custom Lane acts as a catalyst to the neighbourhood: this once forgotten corner is now a thriving hub and has a sense of being rooted into community that links locality with the crafted history of this dockland town. A playful legacy that plays host to a series of programmes that engage – in the words of Stance, who were charged with the identity of Custom Lane, ‘it serves as a platform for, and beacon of, world class design in Scotland.”
Some of the more permanent ‘inmates’ at Custom Lane are featured below – we also recommend that you look over their site and subscribe to their news for the variety of pop-up events celebrating crafted design in its many facets.

Edinburgh Tool Library is the UK’s first tool library, promoting sharing as a way of reducing our environmental impact.
They lend members tools for DIY, gardening, decorating and machine repair, so that they don’t need to own them. Not only does this collaborative approach make sense environmentally, it also helps members financially.
Being a member of ETL gives you access to over 4000 tools without the need to store them, maintain them, or buy them in the first place.
Kestin Hare is a Scottish menswear brand produced by a designer who gets what works and is inspired by what men want for everyday life.
The brand was launched in 2014 by Kestin Hare when he returned to his hometown of Edinburgh. Kestin grew up watching his grandad who had a distinct style, took great pride in his appearance and ran pubs in Leith.
This inspired his degree in Fashion Design BA Hons and Marketing, which then led him directly to the industry where he instantly felt at home.
Kestin carved out his 17-year career working for some of the biggest names, most notably holding the position of Head of Design at Nigel Cabourn. It was here, working on the Ascent of Cabourn collections, that Nigel honed Kestin's passion for vintage, looking to the old to find something new, and instilled the importance of UK manufacturing.
Kestin has steadily created his signature look for Kestin Hare and has continued to nurture his core values of vintage research, seeking out the most unique and technologically advanced fabrics, road testing every garment for fit and purpose, and is in constant conversation with his customers and the best of the industry.
