Summertime Alping - Swap Ski Goggles for Sun Shades

It's time to swap those ski goggles for sun shades, amigos - the light is hitting those magnificent summertime Alps with not a sprinkling of snow in sight. Run through meadows with Maria, soak up buckets of Vitamin D on a hike with the cows and visit sky-high architectural gems with Zaha Hadid.

The Alps don’t close in summer, more like, ‘the hills are alive with the sound of – ‘ well, whether it’s operatic music by the lake, the gentle putting of golf balls, or the happy sigh of a spa bunny, it isn’t all about snow.

This is Summertime Alping, for those in-the-know.

For you culture buffs who like a little luxe on the side, the lakeside operatic Bregenz Festival (17th July – 18th August) lights up Austria’s Bregenzerwald with a world of music, glamour and sunset orchestras. Then head up the hill for a nature hike with the cows, stopping for a bite to eat en-route with the ladies themselves, chillaxing in the local farmer’s hut and munching on butter and cream fresh from the churn, before making your way back down to your own foodie haven hotel.

Seek art among the clouds with Zaha Hadid’s Messner Mountain Museum, an architectural masterpiece and ode to all things mountain climbing in beautiful South Tyrol, or head to Bad Gastein for an immersive artist-in-residence festival experience amongst sommer.frische.kunst’s stunning escapist backdrop.

Meanwhile, Engadin in Switzerland is not to be outdone, with their 1000-metre up pink contemporary art gallery, von bartha.

Putt a birdie at the highest golf course in Austria or soar the mountains on your own two feet, swapping chicken legs for some toned, tanned pins, with a hike along the 10-12-day Haute Route, trekking France to Switzerland with the lush Alpine haze of verdant green foliage and little local villages for company.
