Skiing in South Tyrol means two things: the Merano 2000 Ski Area and the soaring, breath-taking beauty of the Dolomites - a famed UNESCO World Heritage Centre and a favourite part of the Alps for any skier worth his (or her) post-ski-Raclette.
Merano 2000 is one of our favourite places to ski in South Tyrol, mixing Alpine beauty with Mediterranean cool. An exciting and thriving spa town, Merano offers so much for the ardent skier and family, whether it is sun soaked promenade walks in town or sessions on the slopes with the unmistakable Dolomites as a worthy background.
The vast ski network of Merano 2000 features five main areas with a staggering combined total of over 40km of slopes between them. This means that there is a level, a view and a downhill style for everyone, whether it be on skis, a board, or your bum. While most of their slopes are of medium difficulty, three magic carpets and both wide and shallow slopes make Luckis Kinderland the perfect training ground for your little ones. Merano 2000’s ski lifts are also worth a mention, as they will whizz you up to the impressive height of 2000m in record time - just a few minutes – so hold on to the fur of your Moncler.
Alta Badia, on the borders of Austria and Italy, is another fantastic place to head when in South Tyrol, offering unparalleled views of the world renowned Dolomites. Here skiing is a part of their history, it is a tradition, and boy do they do it well. The season in Alta Badia lasts from November to April and is renowned for its fun and lengthy toboggan runs, in particular the heart racing 3½ km journey from Piz Sorega to St. Kassian – completely rejuvenating, it'll have you feeling like a child again.
