There is something truly wonderful about discovering a place to stay that goes beyond the norm, and this rural eco retreat in southern Tuscany is just such a place created with love, passion, patience and respect – this is the fabulous Agriturismo Biologico Sant’Egle. A fully certified organic farmstead, this eco boutique guesthouse had managed to weave comfort and style with sustainability and dollops of originality.
Housed in a characterful 16th Century former customs house, today the Agriturismo Biologico Sant’Egle offers an eco-minded farmstay in utter comfort immersed into the romance of Tuscan patchwork fields and centuries-old twisted olive groves.
Lime-washed walls, rough-hewn aged beams, flagstone and terracotta flooring and a scattering of open fireplaces provide the bucolic canvas to organic bedding, salvaged furnishings, rural artefacts and clever art installations – courtesy of creatively inspired upcycled finds made from castoffs.
Go off horse riding, walking the hills or join a yoga session, cool down in a natural outdoor pool or get snug in the wooden heated bathtub made for two. Absorb the feel-good factor here shared only with the butterflies, birds and scent of truffles.
There is something infectiously serene about the little Sant’Egle, an organic outpost that narrates a simpler ethical life, a path that is humble and enriching.
A stay here is more than just a country escape, it is meaningful and will resonate with you for years to come, who knows, it could be the start of your own adventure and shift in lifestyle.
The Sant’Egle is located in the province of Grosseto, Maremma in Southern Tuscany close to the splendid medieval hill-top towns of Sorano and Pitigliano and its famed Orsini Fortress or a little further afield, is the ancient Terme di Sorano.
A hearty wholesome breakfast of nature’s bounty is served each morning with organic and farm-to-table treats, homemade preserves and produce from their onsite organic shop headlining the start of your day.
Food is always on the agenda here with regular daytime cooking classes. If, during your stay, you fancy gathering around the grill on an evening, the Sant'Egle crew are happy to fire up the BBQ and can even arrange delivery of local organic meats. Alternatively, maybe you always wanted to make the real pizza which always tastes better in Italy - again, no problem with notice and get the tips on how to get that authentic dough.
We also favour heading on out for dinner in one of the countless local restaurants in this fertile corner of Tuscany, your hosts have the insider run down on where to go. If you rent the whole place, why not add a private chef?.
The organic farm shop makes for a perfect foodie pit stop of organic deliciousness and an ideal spot for gifting friends when you return homewards.
All products being vegan, gluten free, cruelty free and organically certified. Shelves are stacked with truffles, dried tomatoes, preserved fruits, vegetables, various cute bottles of home-brew liquors, saffron, spirulina, stevia, nuts, pulses, spices and oleolites made to the Ayurvedic traditions.
Ditching the city life for the off-the-grid farming idyll is something many of us contemplate at some point but rarely execute, the notion of a better life remaining a romantic dream. Well dream do come true amigos, for this is exactly what our host duo Erika Mugnai & Alessandro Pierri did, switching their hectic rhythms for those found in the philosophy of nature.
Passionate, resourceful, creative and determined, the couple have carved not only a thick slice of the good life, but have successfully managed to rethink the guesthouse farm stay and have created a zero impact, ethical vacation hideaway inspired by their love of fresh clean living and a custodial approach to farming the lands where health and happiness come hand in hand.
Even their adorable pet dogs adopt this healthy lifestyle, tails wagging in absolute confirmation.
